White Christian Nationalism and the Black Church’s Prophetic Witness

This course explored the historical and contemporary influence of White Christian Nationalism (WCN) in the United States and examines how the Black Christian tradition has resisted racial and theological distortions of Christianity. By engaging historical analysis, theological critique, and practical application, students gained a deeper understanding of how WCN has shaped American religious and political life, as well as how Black Christians have maintained a prophetic witness against it.

Course Goals:

  • Define and analyze White Christian Nationalism from historical, theological, and political perspectives.
  • Explore the role of race in shaping Christian identity and practice in the United States.
  • Examine the resistance of the Black church to WCN and its ongoing prophetic witness.
  • Equip students with practical strategies to challenge WCN in their own faith communities and contexts.
