Episcopal Divinity School (EDS) is an innovative institution dedicated to forming and equipping leaders for ministry, with a strong commitment to social justice and equity.
Will EDS once again become a degree-granting institution?
EDS is deeply committed to quality theological formation. Right now, the EDS board is undergoing a strategic visioning process to explore what is most needed in the field of theological education in the church today. As we do this, we are offering non-degree, widely accessible theological education offerings covering a variety of topics. You can explore these offerings on our programs page.
I’m an alum. How can I engage with EDS/what is EDS doing to engage alums?
EDS values its community of alums and provides several opportunities each year for in-person connection among alums. The Rev. Dr. Liz Magill works as EDS' Coordinator of Community Life and leads alum engagement, alongside the Rev. Christopher Montella ’15. Learn more about alum events and opportunities on our alum webpage.
What is the status of EDS’ endowment?
EDS is financially well-positioned to fulfill its mission within The Episcopal Church, the Anglican Communion, and beyond. The endowment was valued at roughly $80 million.
How does Episcopal Divinity School select its board members?
EDS selects its board members through a structured process overseen by our board's Committee on Trusteeship. This committee is responsible for identifying and evaluating potential candidates who align with the mission and values of the school. Once the Committee on Trusteeship has put forth a slate of names, the full Board of Trustees votes on these candidates. This ensures that new board members are selected based on a thorough and deliberative process.
Why did EDS leave Union/what happened with Union?
In March 2023, Episcopal Divinity School (EDS) and Union Theological Seminary mutually decided to end their formal affiliation at the conclusion of the 2022-2023 academic year. This decision, made at the five-year review mark, has offered EDS greater missional and operational freedom as it continues to discern its future as a source of progressive theological education.
Where is EDS physically located?
EDS is leasing space at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York as our office. This location supports EDS's Episcopal identity and maintains historical connections to Philadelphia, Boston, and New York. Most EDS programming is virtual, with several in-person events annually. Explore our programs for more information.
Will EDS be an independent school or seek affiliation with an existing institution?
EDS is once again an independent institution. There are no current plans to affliate with an existing institution. EDS is committed to building strong, mutually beneficial partnerships to maximize its impact.
