EDS Joins 57 Faith-based Organizations in an Amici Curiae Brief Focused on Birthright Citizenship

July 6, 2026

Alongside 57 faith-based organizations representing a cross-section of religious traditions, Episcopal Divinity School joined an amici curiae brief submitted to the Supreme Court of the United States in the case Trump v. Barbara.

The brief was submitted in support of the respondents and focuses on the importance of "Birthright Citizenship" from the perspective of diverse faith communities.

In the brief, amici offer our perspective that birthright citizenship is an embodiment of our shared moral imperative to 'welcome the stranger' - a responsibility the United States has enshried in our 14th ammendment.

At its most basic and direct, birthright citizenship ensures that if someone comes to this country to escape religious persecution, their children born here will be citizens and will be able to remain in this country regardless of their parents’ status."
