The Reverend Brandon Thomas Crowley, PhD, is a pastor, scholar, author, and public intellectual whose work bridges the academy, the church, and the public square. His research explores Black religions, theology, homiletics, ecclesiology, and social ethics from the late 19th through the early 21st centuries.
Since 2009, Dr. Crowley has served as Senior Pastor of the Historic Myrtle Baptist Church in Newton, Massachusetts, a congregation founded by formerly enslaved Africans during Reconstruction and widely known for its inclusive ministry and commitment to social justice. Alongside his pastoral leadership, Dr. Crowley serves as the Director of Theological Education and Senior Research Fellow in Religion, Homiletics, and Ecclesiology at the Episcopal Divinity School in New York, New York, as well as a Lecturer in Ministry Studies at Harvard Divinity School in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He is also the 2024–2027 Visiting Professor and Honorary Research Fellow in the Faculty of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences at the University of Exeter in the United Kingdom.
Dr. Crowley has previously taught at Emory University, Boston University, the Episcopal Theological Seminary of the Southwest, Meadville Lombard Theological School, and other institutions. His debut book, Queering Black Churches: Dismantling Heteronormativity in African American Congregations, was published by Oxford University Press in 2024.
An ordained minister in the Progressive National Baptist Convention and licensed in the National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc., Dr. Crowley holds degrees from Morehouse College, Harvard University, and Boston University. His scholarly and professional engagements include membership in the Society for the Study of Black Religion, service on the Council of Religious Practitioners and Scholars at the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C., and editorial work with the Lexington Press Series on Approaches to Religion and Theology and The Global Journal of Black Sexuality and Gender Studies. He also serves as President of the Harvard Divinity School Alumni Council and is a member of the Greater Boston Salvation Army Advisory Board, as well as the Community Benefits and Needs Assessment Committees at Newton-Wellesley Hospital.
