Text of Board Resolution to Cease Degree Granting at Episcopal Divinity School

The following resolution was voted on by the EDS Board of Trustees on July 21.

Whereas the Board of Trustees of Episcopal Divinity School is committed to serve and advance God’s mission of justice, compassion and reconciliation; and

Whereas the Board of Trustees established a Futures Committee to reimagine how Episcopal Divinity School might continue to serve and advance that mission sustainably given the resources it has at its disposal; and

Whereas the Board of Trustees through its Futures Committee solicited and received numerous proposals that would enable Episcopal Divinity School to continue and serve that mission sustainably; and

Whereas the Board of Trustees is grateful for the hard work of the Futures Committee and all those who submitted proposals to reimagine how Episcopal Divinity School might continue and serve that mission sustainably; and

Whereas several of the proposals recommended by the Futures Committee and members of the Board of Trustees merit further consideration; and

Whereas the Board of Trustees wishes to conserve the resources committed to its stewardship for the mission of the school; be it therefore

Resolved, that Episcopal Divinity School cease to grant degrees after the 2016–2017 academic year; and be it further

Resolved, that the Board of Trustees commit to further consideration of ways of continuing to serve and advance God’s mission; and be it further

Resolved, that the Board of Trustees commit to a just, compassionate and reconciling end to the degree-granting functions of Episcopal Divinity School.
